Lawrenceburg is called Whiskey City due to the many distilleries that operated in town. Joseph E. Seagram & Sons, the world's largest distillery, remains. It was started in 1851.
Lawrenceburg, the county seat of Dearborn County, is on the banks of the Ohio River about 25 miles down river from Cincinnati, Ohio. Lawrenceburg was founded in 1801 by Samuel C. Vance, a soldier under Gen. George Washington and an aide to Gen. Anthony Wayne. Vance named the city in honor of his wife, whose maiden name was Lawrence.
About 15 years after Vance laid out Lawrenceburg, he built a mansion, known as the Vance-Tousey house, on West High Street, with its beautiful entranceway facing the Ohio River. The structure is among the finest examples of Federal architecture in the nation. The first three-story "skyscraper" brick building in Indiana was built at Walnut and High streets in 1820 by Jesse Hunt, and was called the Grand Hotel. The vacant structure, which now is known as the Hunt House, is in jeopardy of being demolished. A controversy over the building erupted in the spring 1997, causing the structure owner Golden Nugget to obtain a demolition permit.
The city, which for years was hit hard by floods, especially the devastating 1937 Flood, has been protected by a modern earth embankment levee and new dams since the late 1930s. Severe flooding in March 1997 is a testament to the levee system. Nevertheless, backwater caused major flooding of the Dearborn Plaza off U.S. 50.
