Wolfert Farms
Kim and Kurt Wolfert, Wolfert Farms, along with their children Alexandra, Cheyenne, and Steven, own two farms in Dearborn County consisting of 267 acres.
The Wolferts raise Organic Certified Angus Beef for breeding to raise show calves and sell fat cattle locally. They also own Wolfert Reining Stables where they train and sell reining horses, and offer equine boarding, riding lessons, trail riding to the public.
Kurt also owns Wolfert Engineering Inc located in Germany.
Kurt received the Dearborn County SWCD 2019 "Friend Of Conservation" award.
On their Dearborn County farms they have implemented several new conservation practices: Access Roads, Alternative Watering Facilities, Heavy Use Area Protection Pads, fencing for rotational grazing and Access Control to exclude livestock from sensitive areas such as woodlands, streams, and ponds.
It's a great pleasure to meet and work with the Wolferts and witness their love and passion for their livestock and natural resources. Congratulations!!
Lobenstein FarmsEric Callahan, Lobenstein Farms and his wife McKinzie live in Dearborn County along with their daughter Riley.
Eric was raised on his family and grandparents farms working side by side with them. So farming came naturally as it was in his blood.
Lobenstein Farms have a variety of farming production: 500 acres of row crops, mostly corn and soybeans; 40 acres of specialty crops which are sold at local farmer markets; 40 ewes that are used for breeding and raising market lambs sold locally; 10 head of beef cattle which provide fat cattle to sell locally; and 400 laying hens that provide eggs to be sold at local farm markets.
Their farming practices include rotational cropping, cover crops, rotational grazing, manure management, and a high tunnel to extend the produce growing season including using cover crops in their vegetable rotation.
Eric was a FFA member for six years; a 4-H member for ten years; he received the 2018 SWCD "Friend of Conservation" Award; and has been a Dearborn County SWCD board member since 2016.
It's been a great privileged to work with Eric and his family over the past many years, assisting with technical help to address the natural resources on their farms.
It's an honor to see and know such an amazing young farmer. Congratulations Eric!
